The video is hosted on Vimeo which is an incredible video hosting site for HD amateurs.

The video is a five part thing so here is part one:

I have been writing about Vimeo on this blog during the past month. Mashable is publishing he following news about the departure of Jakob Lodwich:

Founder of and public face on Vimeo Jakob Lodwick has announced on his blog that he’s leaving IAC/Connected Ventures/College Humor. The announcement, which was accompanied by what can only be described as what looks like a heroic hit from a bong, was:

“As of an hour ago, I am no longer affiliated with IAC/InterActiveCorp/Connected Ventures/Vimeo. No hard feelings! Goodbye to everyone at CV; you are wonderful and I will miss you.”

This comes after recent news that Vimeo co-founder Zach Klein has also left the company. Klein recently made headlines as he was being publicly courted by MySpace to give the place a good sprucing up. Lodwick’s leaving of the company is abrupt and unexpected given his very public love adulation of the company at his personal tumblog.

Vimeo is an embedded video website, much like YouTube, with a much nicer look and feel and support for HD video. Vimeo and the related ventures also have close ties to the organization built up around Tumblr.

Valley Wag is propagating a rumor that Lodwick might have been fired, although there are no public confirmations from either Vimeo nor Lodwick to affirm or discredit this. As of present, Lodwick could not be reached for comment, as he’s “turned off [his] cell phone for the evening and catch up with everyone later!”

OK, I confess, I am not an AJAX expert… but one thing I know is that Leopard broke some web sites AJAX upload features.

For example, using Apple Leopard, Vimeo upload and Flickr upload are broken. I have not done a huge search for other sites suffering from the same thing but I am sure there are a ton more.

The interesting thing is that this is not with Apple Safari browser… it is with Firefox 2.0.0.8! The exact same Firefox browser that I use in Tiger… And yes, I booted back into Tiger and verified that everything was working with it.

So for all I know Leopard is somehow breaking some of those nice AJAX interfaces… in both Firefox and Safari. Why? I have no idea! But it is rather odd that it impact both Safari and Firefox.

Update:

People on Digg have started to comment that MySpace suffer the same faith. I wonder if this is something Apple can address via a software update?

Digg this story!

I already reported on this during the week-end… but here is the official announcement:

Vimeo, the fast-growing online community that has created a new platform for the sharing of personal video, today announced the introduction of High-Definition (“HD”), making it the first site to enable HD video sharing.

Recognizing that there is an increasing demand for, and appreciation of, better quality video, this Vimeo breakthrough allows content creators at every level of sophistication to share their videos in native 720p (1280 x 720) resolution, which is 12 times better than the standard 320 x 240 resolution of other video sites.

“Video is an incredibly immersive medium. And so, people are very passionate about the quality of their video, and the viewing experience of those they have chosen to share their videos with,” said Vimeo Founder Jakob Lodwick. “Vimeo is differentiated by the quality of its content, and the quality of its underlying video viewing platform.”

Now that the price of HD camcorders has dropped below $1,000, more and more people are interested in HD. Vimeo’s HD platform utilizes the latest video technologies to deliver HD content in real time via broadband connection.

In addition to HD, Vimeo is introducing a variety of related services to improve the experience for its community, including Albums, which is a new way to organize videos [http://www.vimeo.com/326181] on the site, and a redesigned video player to take full advantage of higher quality video.

Jakob Lodwick founded Vimeo as an extension of his life-long passion for creating video. “As an amateur filmmaker, I’m eager to present my work in the best possible environment. And that’s true for anyone who picks up a camera. HD will inspire content creators to rise to the occasion, and to share video in the way it was meant to be seen,” added Lodwick.

I just learned that Vimeo is now accepting user created content in HD resolution:

The resulting video quality is really quite amazing. Streaming is fast and extremely good looking.

Uploading files is really simple and the interactive interface provide really nice feedback for those large files you may want to upload.

Look at the following screen capture where you can see that my 192MB file is 33% uploaded and will take 21 more minute to upload:

If you have HD content you want to share this is one easy option.

Once your upload is done Vimeo will convert it before it can be viewed online. Due to the high volume my video was placed in a wait queue:

When the video get to the conversion engine you receive the following screen indicating of the actual conversion progress:

Once the conversion is completed your video can be viewed online by everyone or only by people you select. In my case I have selected to make it public so you can view the result here (540p) and here (720p).

About Vimeo (source wikipedia):

Vimeo is a video-sharing site (owned by Connected Ventures) which launched in November 2004. The site supports embedding and video downloads, and allows user-commenting on each video page. Users must register to upload content. Registered users may also create a profile and upload small user pictures as their avatars.

The main difference between the site and other competing sites such as YouTube is that Vimeo pertains to user-created videos, of a friend and family nature. No pornography, TV shows, music videos, movies or anything not created by the user can be uploaded.
