Blinkx Launches Yet Another Online TV Service

April 2, 2008

After Joost, Babelgum, iPlayer, Livestation, Vuze et al comes yet another online TV platform. Web video search index Blinkx is branching farther out in to distribution by launching its own version - hybrid P2P player Blinkx Broadband TV (BBTV). Its only content partners at launch are said to be film distributor Dogwoof and ubiquitous news provider ITN, though the repertoire this morning consisted of short cartoons, all on-demand. Blinkx says BBTV (which, incidentally, also stands for BoingBoing TV) harnesses Blinkx’s core speech recognition video transcription technology to offer searchability and clickable subtitles that point to web pages in a manner tightly integrated with the 1.8Mb Windows-only TV app. If the world really needs another P2P TV app, then it may be because of this snazzy-sounding feature - but it’s something that didn’t seem to work during my test.

New York, NY (PRWEB) March 26, 2008 — The 2nd Annual International Film Festival Summit (IFFS) Europe (www.iffseurope.com) is taking place April 15-16, 2008, at The Cumberland Hotel in London.

In this age of the Internet, various technologies and a multitude of new media outlets; alternative distribution methods are playing significant roles with filmmakers and film festivals. This is an important discussion that will take place at the IFFS Europe.

The session - Alternative Distribution: New Opportunities for Festivals and Filmmakers - includes the following panelists: Claudio Scotto di Carlo, Chief Editor of Babelgum; Elliot Grove, the Founder and Director of the Raindance Film Festival; Michael Cowan, the Co-Founder & Managing Director and Joint CEO of Spice Factory and Velvet Octopus, respectively; and Bob Alexander, the President of IndiePix.

Film buffs are suddenly eager to watch movies on all kinds of new platforms - whether PCs, cell phones, portable devices, or on television sets linked to the Internet. Some festivals have experimented with making shorts and features available on these platforms for a limited time, expanding their audience reach. But filmmakers can be skittish, worrying that this new digital availability might damage their movie’s value in the marketplace.

“The new internet distribution platforms are an exciting opportunity for independent filmmakers,” said panelist Elliot Grove, founder of the Raindance Film Festival. “Everyone is talking about IPTV. Now is the time for film festivals to get a strategy together, and maximise the value of this brand new delivery medium.”

The unique and established group of panelists will discuss how festivals and filmmakers can work together to address the challenges and take advantage of the new opportunities that alternative channels of distribution create.

This highly insightful panel will take place on Tuesday, April 15th at 1:15 pm.

Babelgum, now for Mac

March 10, 2008

Guess what just showed up in my mailbox?  An email from Babelgum inviting me to have a second look at it!  And what new platform just got added?  Right, Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5!  And apparently there is support for both PPC and intel processors!

This is great news and will certainly please the PPC Mac users.  At least they can run Babelgum while they are still waiting for their Joost PPC client support.

The client is very clean and the integration on the OSX environment is well done.  I particularly like they way it start… by showing at 50% transparency over the desktop.

I guess Linux users are getting no love from Babelgum and Joost.

So when will we see a Babelgum and Joost client for the iPhone now that the SDK has been released?

One more departure at Babelgum

December 7, 2007

Internet television platform Babelgum has lost another top executive — its CTO, Mallku Caballero. (Thanks for the tip, commenter Rumpelstiltskin.) Caballero, who left the company about a month ago, told paidContent:UK: ”Let’s just say that I did not fully adhere to the vision and to the management style brought in by the new CEO.”

As we reported in October, Babelgum co-founder Erik Lumer, who was demoted from his CEO position when the company brought in new CEO Valerio Zingarelli this year, also left the company. Lumer, according to a press release he emailed to us, left to become CEO of RawFlow. But RawFlow has yet to update its web site to acknowledge this information.

Babelgum may outlast the turbulence of its executive departures simply by virtue of how much money it has. Silvio Scaglia, who was CEO of Omnitel when Zingarelli was there, co-founded Babelgum with Lumer. Scaglia funded the company with $13.2 million of his own money, and told BusinessWeek he plans to spend $130 million more over the next few years. Notably, however, competitors such as Joost and Veoh have massive war chests of their own.

IPTV and I-TV on potential collision course

October 11, 2007

IPTV could be on a collision course with the Internet TV services being offered by the likes of Joost and Babelgum, according to a senior executive at IBM.

Speaking at the Broadband World Forum in Berlin yesterday, Rob Van Dem Dan, the European telecom leader for IBM, said there are a number of potential collision points between telcos offering IPTV to their customers and Internet firms launching video-based websites.

One issue is distribution, which has already sparked arguments in the U.S. about so-called “net neutrality” — whether telcos should be free to filter traffic travelling over their networks and make Internet companies pay for a prioritized service.

Babelgum launches direct upload facility

October 8, 2007

Babelgum has launched a new direct upload facility for independent producers, rights owners and program partners to manage their assets on the online platform.

In addition, on 29th October 2007, the facility’s features will advance to provide for the simultaneous upload of entire content libraries, saving time and placing control in the hands of all pre-qualified professional content owners and distributors.

The service, believed to be the first of its kind on the Web, is provided free of any charges and offers content owners the opportunity to dynamically manage the way their body of work is distributed online. Rights holders maintain complete control of their assets by placing material on Babelgum to suit their individual distribution requirements in contrast to the restrictive environment experienced in traditional broadcasting.

Content owners can operate autonomously and showcase their work when they choose without the constraints of working within traditional broadcast schedules.

Erik Schuit, Head of Distribution at leading production and distribution company Off the Fence, looks forward to the independence and freedom this facility offers companies like his commenting, “Off the Fence sees massive potential in the Babelgum offering in terms of consumer reach. We have been a content partner for some time, however facilities that give direct access to the platform and the ability to manage the timing of distribution of our content ourselves puts us back in control.

“Regarding the announcement, Valerio Zingarelli, CEO of Babelgum, said, “This direct upload facility is designed with the needs of the many independent small-medium sized professional producers in mind.

Joost losing steam… Veoh eventually taking the lead?

October 6, 2007

Update:

A Joost IRC user (xMattx) pointed to me the fact that Veoh was primarilly a video distribution site much like Youtube… and as such comparing it directly to Joost was unfair. So a better comparison would be with VeohTV (The TV side of Veoh):

Now… you can’t see VeohTV on the (or hardly). I guess this is what I was expecting to see last night. Let remove Joost from the equasion to see the details of Babelgum and VeohTV:

It is clear that VeohTV + Veoh TV combined trends have the lead over Babelgum… but are far behind (trend wise) Joost in the TV distribution space. But note the constant increase of VeohTV… if Joost decline and Veoh TV incline was to stay constant then they would intersect in about a year.

End of Update

I was curious to see what kind of popularity trend Joost had compared to it’s rival Babelgum and Veoh. So I turned to Google Trends to paint a picture for me. The picture depicted was not at all the one I was expecting:

As you can see Joost has been loosing popularity ever since it was announced that it had raised 45$ million dollar in funding (News C). The news about Joost new CEO Mike Volpi was not even seen as a blip on the chart (News D).

Veoh actually passed Joost in popularity at around May 15 2007 and has kept getting more and more popular ever since (with a noticeable slowdown in August and September).

I am curious to see what kind of effect the recent Joost announcement will have on it’s popularity. Google trends is not the all and be all for success measure… but it certainly is a variable to take into account.

Babelgum is clearly not a strong competitor at this point.

To be sure that Google was not leading me in the wrong direction I also checked with Alexa and got a similar picture:
