Adobe on Thursday is expected to launch a beta test program for the latest version of its Flash Player software.

Flash Player 10, developed under the code name Astro, includes better support for 3D animation and video hardware acceleration, among other improvements.

Adobe said that Flash Player 10 will now support custom visual effects, created with Adobe’s free Pixel Bender tools. Developers can write code to create effects that can be rendered by Flash Player at runtime.

Developers can also now target code to render through graphics processors, speeding up performance and freeing CPU bandwidth, Adobe says.

The beta version of Flash Player 10 will be available from Adobe’s Labs site.

Flash Player 10 will run on Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000, Mac OS X and Linux.

Adobe said that some of the new features in Flash Player 10 will ultimately be incorporated into a future release of Adobe AIR and the Open Screen Project, Adobe’s movement to create industry consensus around Flash-based technologies for mobile devices.

Adobe has announced the immediate availability of Adobe Flash Player 9 Update 3 software, previously code named Moviestar.

Adobe Flash Player 9 now includes H.264 standard video support, the same standard deployed in Blu-Ray and HD-DVD high definition video players, and High Efficiency AAC (HE-AAC) audio capabilities.

The combination of Adobe Flash Player 9 and Adobe Flash Media Server 3 (also announced today) enables the delivery of HD quality video to the broadest online audience. Adobe Flash Player 9 Update 3 is available immediately at http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer.

H.264 support is an encoding option in Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects software and is now integrated across the Adobe Flash family of products. Expected to be available in early 2008, Adobe Media Player, the first application from Adobe built on Adobe AIR, will leverage both H.264 video and HE-AAC audio support. Adobe Media Player takes Flash streaming video experiences outside the Web browser delivering more viewing options, such as watching videos anytime, anywhere.

With H.264 and HE-AAC support in Adobe Flash Player 9 and Adobe Flash Media Server 3, content providers can now deliver HDTV-quality streaming video on the Web.

“Together with Adobe, we will provide a best-in-class, high definition video experience.”

“The inclusion of industry standard H.264 support in Adobe Flash Player, Adobe AIR, the Adobe Creative Suite product line and Adobe Flash Media Server 3 brings new HD capabilities to millions of Flash developers and a new generation of viewers who are turning to the Web as the place to find their favorite shows and video content.”

Adobe Flash Player 9 is immediately available as a free download for Windows, Macintosh and Linux platforms from http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer . To learn more about Adobe Flash Player 9, please visit http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/ .

DivX has acquired MainConcept AG, a leading provider of H.264 and other high-quality video technologies for the broadcast, film, consumer electronics and computer software markets.

The acquisition is a stock and cash transaction valued at approximately $22 million with additional payments of up to approximately $6 million upon the achievement by MainConcept of certain product development goals and certain financial milestones during 2008.

MainConcept designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of high-quality video and audio technology based on industry standards. Its key partners include leading software, entertainment and consumer electronics companies. MainConcept’s portfolio of video technologies, including its industry leading H.264 video codec, is expected to extend the DivX common media language to additional platforms and formats. The combination of DivX and MainConcept is intended to create a company with substantial scale and resources to deliver products and services that offer the consumer a powerful, yet seamless high-quality media experience.

“We are extremely pleased to add MainConcept to the DivX family,” said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX. “Company founder Markus Moenig, our new Senior Vice President, has worked with a talented team of engineers to build a successful company with award winning next-generation codec technology that is highly complementary to the core DivX licensing business. MainConcept’s H.264 technology is expected to increase our market opportunity and speed our penetration of key emerging product categories, including mobile, HDTV, set-top boxes and digital still cameras. With this combination, we are executing on our strategy to deliver a seamless and simple digital media experience where any piece of content plays back on any kind of device, and formats and codecs are completely transparent to the end-user.”

“This is a great partnership that we believe will prove beneficial to both MainConcept and DivX,” said Markus Moenig, CEO and Founder of MainConcept AG. “Our product suites and business models are highly complementary, and our combined companies offer a rich solution for the creation, distribution and playback of high-quality video across virtually any platform or device. We look forward to bringing these two great teams together.”

“MainConcept is a solid strategic complement to our high gross margin licensing business,” stated Dan Halvorson, DivX Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. “The increased costs related to operations and the integration of MainConcept could impact our fourth quarter by approximately $0.02 to $0.03 per diluted share. We expect this acquisition to be accretive to our quarterly earnings in the second half of 2008.”

I am amazed! I just got my invitation to LiveStation and was shocked to find out it was not supported under Mac. Tough I said. Let see ho it will runder under Parallels desktop for Mac.

To my surprise it run just fine! Actually I was even able to capture this YouTube video in realtime directly to h.264 as it was running! I did this on my iMac 17″ 2 Ghz Core 2 Duo with 2GB of RAM.

LiveStation is providing an amazing video quality at only 256kbps of bandwidth.

There is not much to watch at this point… only one BBC UK live stream.

I will write more about it later. For now enjoy the YouTube video:

About 3 hours ago we let the world know that for the last few months, we’ve been quietly building and testing an entirely new version of Parallels Desktop for Mac. Named Desktop for Mac 3.0, this forthcoming major update – due in a few weeks – has over 50 great new features. Since we’re still in beta testing I won’t go into all of them, but I did want to highlight two of them:

SmartSelect: A wicked cool new feature that lets you assign any OS X or Windows application as the default for any Mac or Windows file type. This means that when you right-click on any file in either OS and selects “open with”, SmartSelect automatically populates the recommended application list with compatible applications from both operating systems.

With SmartSelect, I set Word for Windows to be my default application to work with .doc, .rtf and .txt files, so when I double click a file with that extension in either OS – even if it is an email attachment in Apple Mail – the file instantly opens the file in Word. I’ve also configure SmartSelect to open all hyperlinks clicked in either OS to open in Firefox for Mac, and for all email to route through Apple Mail. This is total OS integration on a file and application level…put it together with Coherence, and you have the most seamless user experience possible.

Yes, as shocking as it may be, I took one for the team and played Windows games in my VM for a whole day to make sure that they run well. Aren’t I noble?

Stay tuned for news about the final release of 3.0 in the next few weeks. Oh, and I’ll see you all at WWDC, where we’ll have more big news for you.
