Joost looking for Plug-In developer with OSX/Linux experience
May 27, 2008

I was looking through Joost web site tonight and noticed a link for a Plug-In Developer.
I taught, this look like something that might be linked to the possible future video web site. So I went ahead and followed the link. I noticed something interesting in the “Desired” section:
- Experience of OSX or Linux installation and configuration would be an advantage.
- Experience with scripting applications including FLASH.
Babelgum, now for Mac
March 10, 2008
Guess what just showed up in my mailbox? An email from Babelgum inviting me to have a second look at it! And what new platform just got added? Right, Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5! And apparently there is support for both PPC and intel processors!
This is great news and will certainly please the PPC Mac users. At least they can run Babelgum while they are still waiting for their Joost PPC client support.
The client is very clean and the integration on the OSX environment is well done. I particularly like they way it start… by showing at 50% transparency over the desktop.
I guess Linux users are getting no love from Babelgum and Joost.
So when will we see a Babelgum and Joost client for the iPhone now that the SDK has been released?
Joost Apple Dashboard Widget
January 25, 2008
Joost has a couple of big Mac fans. If you don’t know many Mac fans you might think they’re all alike in their ardor for Apple and worship for Jobs … but that would be a wildly inaccurate assumption. By my calculations, there are at least three categories of Mac fans.
Category 1: The casual fan. IKerry Vance is probably in this camp: a lapsed Mac user who loved my Mac, and gave it up reluctantly years ago. She follow the news, ooh and ahh over the designs, and have at least one Mac gadget … like an iPod. You don’t find a lot of regular Mac users in this category, because…
Category 2: Most of the Mac users Kerry know are in this category. They LOVE their Macs, wouldn’t give them up under any circumstances, and might find a new job if they were forced to use a PC at work.
Category 3: And then you have the zealots. Like Kerry’s colleague Zoran (also known as Z). Z was one of the first in line to buy his iPhone, and waited in line (again) in the cold when the second-biggest Apple store opened in New York last month.
In addition to being a Mac fan, Z has some serious design skills (he’s a designer for Joost in his day job), which he used to make what we think is the first Apple Dashboard widget for Joost. You can browse shows by category, find what’s new and popular, and once you find what you want to watch, you launch the channel directly in Joost. Plus, it flips, it spins and it grooves.
Download it here and let us know what you think!

September 19, 2007
NBC.com has announced a service called “NBC Direct” which will allow users to download NBC shows such as “The Office,” “30 Rock,” and “Heroes,” to their desktop. The NBC Direct software will allow users to view each episode for up to one week, at which point the license will expire. While free to view the shows, the videos will include advertising.
NBC Direct will also include a feature for automatically delivering new episodes of NBC shows to users. Versions for both Windows and Mac are expected, with the first release of the software coming in October.

From the NBC release:
The first version of this new feature, which will begin beta testing in October, will allow users to download full length episodes for viewing on Windows based PCs. Each original episode will be licensed to users for viewing through “NBC Direct” for one week following broadcast and will then expire. The downloaded file will provide users with an improved overall viewing experience compared to traditional streaming video.
The list of programs available at launch will include “Heroes,” “The Office,” “Life,” “Bionic Woman,” “30 Rock,” “Friday Night Lights,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.”Later in the beta launch, users will be provided the free subscription option that will allow them to pre-select their favorite NBC programs they want to watch. Those shows will be automatically delivered to their computers as soon as they are available after the original broadcast. The downloadable player will also have filtering technology, which will prevent it from playing any stolen copyrighted material.
Microsoft LiveStation can run on an Intel iMac
July 17, 2007
I am amazed! I just got my invitation to LiveStation and was shocked to find out it was not supported under Mac. Tough I said. Let see ho it will runder under Parallels desktop for Mac.
To my surprise it run just fine! Actually I was even able to capture this YouTube video in realtime directly to h.264 as it was running! I did this on my iMac 17″ 2 Ghz Core 2 Duo with 2GB of RAM.
LiveStation is providing an amazing video quality at only 256kbps of bandwidth.
There is not much to watch at this point… only one BBC UK live stream.
I will write more about it later. For now enjoy the YouTube video:
Joost beta client 0.10.8 now superced version 0.10.7
June 29, 2007
The new 0.10.8 client is now available on the Joost web download site. This version fixes some unknown issues. You can download the beta clients directly by following the following links:
windows: https://downloads.joost.com/downloads/JoostSetup-FriendsEdition-0.10.8.exe
mac: https://downloads.joost.com/downloads/Joost-FriendsEdition-0.10.8.dmg
Another little thing worth noting is that the Joost website no longer sport the moving colors in the header. It was apparently too CPU intensive for some users PC/Mac.
Thank you Joost for this welcome change!
Apple .mac hosted service moving to Google announcement next monday?
June 8, 2007
Cloud computing is the hot new thing in the world of technology right now; Apple is a complete laggard; and it knows it needs to fix it.
Apple makes beautiful hardware, but it hasn’t improved on .Mac, its cloud based storage offering, in years. Meanwhile, Google runs cloud based hardware and software better and cheaper than anyone in the world right now.
And the hints from Eric Schmidt, Google’s CEO and Apple board member and from Apple boss Steve Jobs point squarely in that direction. Jobs’ response to .Mac’s whithered state? “stay tuned.”
