Will Rogers force iPhone 3G purchase with 3 year plan?

It is not clear yet it Rogers will allow customers to purchase iPhone 3G at full retail value (well above 199$) and then do month by month contract for voice and unlimited data plan.

If Rogers follow the lead of AT&T it might not be possible. Here is a section of a rumored internal memo sent to AT&T managers detailing the rules regarding iPhone 3G contract requirements:

All customers will be required to sign a 2-year agreement. There will not be a “no commitment” price for the iPhone 3G.

Note: When the 3G device launches, all active postpaid customers in good standing with a 2G iPhone will be eligible to receive the qualified upgrade pricing for a 3G device regardless of service tenure. (Customers that would not otherwise be eligible due to tenure will be made eligible at launch).

It was reported that Rogers might be opting for a 3 year iPhone subscription. I was hoping to pay more (like 399$) for the device and avoid the creepy 3 year sing with your blood contract.

3 years! This is silly madness! I am sure Apple will come up with the iPhone version 3 within 2 years! I don’t want no stinky 3 years contract! This is maddening! I really hope this 3 year contract rumor is false… and if it is true Rogers better allow me to buy the device outright and offer no contract commitment options.
