You must have noticed a tiny bit of a difference on the web site? No? Darn, I must have screwed up something!Kidding aside, I have decided it was time for a JoostTeam facelift.

So I went looking around and decided to go for a clean cut look and feel with a nice summary front page that show more news that the original layout. Read more

Is Joost pushing the naughty factor a bit too much

May 31, 2008

Joost ad 8.png

Joost, the pioneer of peer-2-peer online TV distribution is starting to get noticed for it “provocative” and targetted visual publicity. I personally don’t mind it (hey, I am a man… you know) but some people feel less that excited about it.

I have been asked by some people I shown Joost to if it was some kind of a porn site!

Microsoft: It’s Not The Broadcast Flag, It’s A Different Flag

May 29, 2008

200805292322.jpg

After certain NBC TV shows wouldn’t record on Microsoft’s Vista Media Center a few weeks ago, Microsoft admitted that Media Center includes broadcast flag technology, while NBC Universal admitted that it accidentally set the flag. However, now Microsoft is trying to clarify, claiming that it’s not actually the broadcast flag that it included, but an entirely different flag, called CGMS-A. NBC Universal concurs, saying that the mistake it made was in setting the CGMS-A flag. Of course… the real question is why does this matter at all? If the impact is identical (Microsoft willing to let TV networks declare a show un-recordable), then what does it matter which annoying copy protection scheme is used?

Microsoft Demo Multi-Touch Windows 7

May 29, 2008

OK, this really is like Vista with a multi-touch interface slapped on it. It look somewhat similar to some of the “Surface” demo that I have seen around (especially the playing with virtual water)

I think they are trying to show that they too can come up with a multi-touch OS. They must have intelligence telling them that Apple is about to release something similar and they want to make sure people had seen it first from MS. Good tactic MS. Read more

Big changes coming to .Mac?

May 29, 2008

Rumors are flying about major changes coming to Apple’s .Mac online service. Perhaps most interesting is this post from Dmitry Chestnykh, the CEO at Coding Robots. He went through the iCal Localizable.strings file in the recently released 10.5.3 update and found a number of changes. In particular, he found a lot of evidence that the .Mac brand name is going to be replaced. Apple is apparently using a placeholder %@ which will be dynamically replaced by the new name, whatever that is, when it’s released.

A while back we posted on another rumor that .Mac syncing was coming with iPhone 2.0 to bring the enterprise features to those of us without Outlook server access. My guess now is that Apple is going to announce a radical overhaul of the service (including iPhone syncing), together with a new name at WWDC. As far as I’m concerned it can’t happen soon enough.

Leopard running on an Atom Processor

May 27, 2008

Using PC_efi technology (a means to run OS X on a PC without kernel modification), an anonymous source for netkas.org has managed to run and benchmark Leopard on an Atom chip, which is rumored (and denied) to be headed for Mac.

The Atom Processor would certainly make a good candidate for a mini-tablet. It’s small enough to fit any form factor, and low power enough to run for long periods in small devices. According to netkas, you can even run one of these on solar power. Here are the results of an Xbench test, courtesy of netkas:

More details are available at netkas.org.

I was looking through Joost web site tonight and noticed a link for a Plug-In Developer.

I taught, this look like something that might be linked to the possible future video web site. So I went ahead and followed the link. I noticed something interesting in the “Desired” section:

  • Experience of OSX or Linux installation and configuration would be an advantage.
  • Experience with scripting applications including FLASH.

Rumors indicate Eee Box will be called EBOX, coming June 3

May 25, 2008

What we have been calling the Asus Eee Box looks to finally have an official name. Based on unnamed sources, the Inquirer is reporting that the desktop PC will be called the Asus EBOX. As already speculated, they are saying it will be revealed on June 3 at Computex. Specs also look to be what we’ve been told already: 160GB HDD, 2GB RAM, and a Linux OS. Nothing much more to see here, but we’re hoping Asus will give this thing a competitive price for those looking to tinker with a slick open-source box.
