PChome plans to introduce Joost

PChome Online, a large web portal and the operating agent of Skype VoIP services in Taiwan, is negotiating with Niklas Zennstrom to introduce Joost, a platform to provide broadband P2P online TV content, to the Taiwan market, according to company chairman Hung-tze Jan at a press conference on October 4.

The planned introduction of Joost was motivated by the large market potential of Internet-based audio/video services as well as PChome’s successful operation of Skype in Taiwan, Jan pointed out. PChome hopes to duplicate its operational model of Skype with Joost, Jan emphasized.

For the time being, however, the operational environment for Joost in Taiwan is not mature enough based on the existing hardware infrastructure and due to the lack of a commercial operational model, Jan explained.

The press conference was for the anniversary of Ruten, a Taiwan-focused online auction platform established by PChome and eBay on a joint venture basis. Ruten has reached more than five million listed good items for auction, the largest volume among all auction web portals in Taiwan, according to Ruten COO Simon Yeh.
