Joost beta client 0.11.0 is out
July 31, 2007
Joost 0.11.0 just got released. You can use the following links to download it directly from Joost:
Mac version: Joost-FriendsEdition-0.11.0.dmg
Win version: JoostSetup-FriendsEdition-0.11.0.exe
This is apparently just a bug fix release with some internal refactoring and a few new features like a Joost Help overlay for new users and the Blog This widget.
There’s also a handy new keyboard shortcut, v (upper or lowercase works), that lets you zoom content which is 4×3 so it fills the screen in 16×9. (or the reverse)
Enjoy testing out the new client!
Joost clone is here… with Porn
July 27, 2007
Guess what just showed up? An almost perfect flash based Joost clone application!
You have to try it to believe it! In full screen the resemblance is almost perfect. In some respect it is actually better than Joost. Playback is very smooth and UI is highly responsive.
Joost will most likelly get mad! Why? The clone application directly link to Porn content like PornoTube and make use of Joost Logo and UI design without Joost consent.
See the two screen capture below:

I can see a Cease and Desist letter arriving in the mail real soon… but Joost might be better hiring him to kick start porting their application to flash and have it play on virtually any platforms in a heartbeat.
Notice that YouTube, Google Video, Veoh are all channels served by the clone… talk about culture clash.Joost always stated that it was not interested in user generated content. This clone essentially turn the table around on Joost without their consent. Joost, imitation is the ultimate flattery… right?
Longtime Flash developer Paul Yanez told NewTeeVee Friday that he started playing around with building a Joost app for about a month now, but just started emailing people about it last night (click on the thumbnail at left to see a screenshot). A Joost beta tester, he was frustrated with having to download a new version of the application every time it was updated. “It seemed to me like it should have been built in Flash in the first place,” he said.

I am amazed! I just got my invitation to LiveStation and was shocked to find out it was not supported under Mac. Tough I said. Let see ho it will runder under Parallels desktop for Mac.
To my surprise it run just fine! Actually I was even able to capture this YouTube video in realtime directly to h.264 as it was running! I did this on my iMac 17″ 2 Ghz Core 2 Duo with 2GB of RAM.
LiveStation is providing an amazing video quality at only 256kbps of bandwidth.
There is not much to watch at this point… only one BBC UK live stream.

YouTube, NBC not happy with VeohTV
July 16, 2007
No one has filed a lawsuit against VeohTV yet, but it could just be a matter of time. The service is something of a cross between YouTube and Joost, giving you the ability to surf for online videos without using a web browser.
The problem is that many of those videos don’t come from Veoh, but from sources like NBC, CBS, and YouTube. That includes full length streaming episodes of shows like 24, Heroes, and 30 Rock. And Veoh doesn’t ask for permission to distribute those videos.
The company’s argument is interesting. Since the networks and other sites are streaming these episodes for free, Veoh says all its VeohTV player does is provide a new interface for streaming the content. Any video advertising included by the content owner remains intact.
But NBC and YouTube officials tell the New York Times that they’re not too happy with the service. If viewers can access their videos without going to their web sites, they lose out on potential advertising revenue. So either Veoh’s going to have to work out licensing agreements with content owners, or we’re going to see this battle headed to court. Unless of course Veoh fails to make a dent in the marketplace. Then we doubt anyone will really care. VeohTV is still in private beta.
