Joost’s choice of Cisco Systems’ service provider sector chief Mike Volpi as CEO may extend the startup’s programmer- and advertiser-friendly strategy to an equivalent friendliness with broadband operators, according to one industry analyst.
Joost noted that Volpi also pioneered a mergers and acquisition process at Cisco led to acquisitions of more than 70 companies during his tenure. Kaufhold notes that Joost has established a precedent as a “good neighbor” by “building a system from the ground up to satisfy programmers and advertisers” based on first consulting those entities about their needs.
Now, he says, the company has selected a helmsman with the personal relationships and technological understanding to repeat that process with access network partners needed to grow Joost’s peer-to-peer (P2P) architecture into a large-scale infrastructure. However, he says, “services like Joost are finding ways to make the video just the storefront to get people involved in the product and to provide a feedback loop to creators and advertisers.
