Volpi now officially Joost CEO

Internet television service Joost named former Cisco senior executive Mike Volpi as its new chief executive on Tuesday, choosing a telecom veteran to lead the company as it courts big media to show programming on its site.

A 13-year veteran of network communications equipment maker Cisco Systems Cisco Systems Inc, Volpi was, until he resigned in February, considered a successor to Cisco CEO John Chambers.

Michelangelo Volpi spent 5 of his 13 years at Cisco Systems selling networking equipment to the companies like Comcast and Time Warner Cable that bring television into living rooms.

Joost, which is based in London, is building a global television network of full-length TV shows and movies and sending it to viewers over the Internet.

The Joost player, which users must download to their personal computer’s, now provides access to niche material like “The Martial Arts Channel,” as well as programs from better-known channels like CNN, MTV and the Cartoon Network that are properties of the media companies Time Warner and Viacom.

GigaOM has done an interview with Volpi. You can read it here. One interesting statement about the AppleTV is:

OM: Is there a chance we will see Joost on AppleTV?

MV: We would love to put Joost on the Apple TV platform. We know we can make it run on any operating system.

Kara Swisher from allthingsd is asking Volpi 5 open questions.  You will find them here.
