Transformer, the original series now on Joost

So, at this point, just about everyone knows that the live-action Transformers movie will hit theatres here in the US next week. And I have to say, I’m pretty excited.
I’m what you’d call a dormant Transformers fan. Growing up, I used to watch the cartoon religiously, had my fair share of the toys and, for a time, considered myself an honorary Autobot. (I suspect it’s telling whether a young kid associates with the heroic Autobots or the evil Decepticons … but I digress.)

As I got older, my love for the Transformers fell by the wayside. It wasn’t until Hasbro launched the Transformers channel on Joost a few months back that I was reunited with these old friends. The channel featured the Transformers: Armada series, which was new to me but featured all the classic characters I know and love.
Well, this great channel is about to get even better. Today, Joost and Hasbro are premiering the first season of the original Transformers: Generation 1 series, in all of its full-screen, full-length glory! This is the series that most of us grew up with and remember so well. We’re starting with the first season, but we have plans to add more and more episodes, and we’ll show the entire G1 series soon.
With all this Transformers on the brain, I’m fully prepared to see the movie next week. I may even have to do the whole standing-in-line-on-opening-night thing. What’s fun about opening night for a movie like this is that the entire theater will be full of true fans. If you’ve never seen a fan favourite like this during its first showing, it’s quite an experience and highly recommended.
In the meantime, be sure to check out the Transformers channel (http://joost.com/0560016) on Joost. We also stuck a bunch of trailers and previews for the movie in the channel, so click on the Transformers logo to check them out.
The Transformers are back. It’s like 1984 all over again!

June 29, 2007
The new 0.10.8 client is now available on the Joost web download site. This version fixes some unknown issues. You can download the beta clients directly by following the following links:
windows: https://downloads.joost.com/downloads/JoostSetup-FriendsEdition-0.10.8.exe
mac: https://downloads.joost.com/downloads/Joost-FriendsEdition-0.10.8.dmg
Another little thing worth noting is that the Joost website no longer sport the moving colors in the header. It was apparently too CPU intensive for some users PC/Mac.

June 26, 2007
The following was just posted on the Joost forum:
Hi all,
You’re probably not able to run Joost, right now. We’re aware of the problem: one of the certificates the client uses to ensure security has expired. We’ll have a new version available for download in the next few hours.
Sorry for the inconvenience
A similar event brought the Joost network down a few weeks back.Hopefully this is the last time such a thing happen! Viva Beta!

A symptom of the problem is an error message displayed before the application crash when attempting to connect tot he network: “Crash report submitted successfully”.

MyTvPal may offer 1000 free channels in Australia
June 25, 2007
A Canadian Company, MyTvPal.com is evaluating the Australian market with a view to launching a brand new content service that will allow Australians to access over 1,000 channels of content for free. They will also have access to 1080p movies and 1080p IMAX documentaries.
Key to the free service for consumers is the placement of advertising in the content. For content that is not free such as 1st run movies a charge of between US$3.99 for 720 content and $5.99 for 1080p HD content will apply.
All that consumers will have to pay to get the free service is a MyTvPal set top box which will cost around US$350.
The issue for MyTvPal.com is finding the right data centre partners as well as retailers or a distributor that can sell their set top boxes…

Where’d Apple Get Its Juice?
June 25, 2007
Tweak the hardware. Cell phone batteries are often as large as the gadget’s casing can accommodate, and there are no surprise technologies that can make a standard battery retain its juice longer. Instead, manufacturers concentrate on power management.
Along with the screen, chips are the biggest power-consumers in a cellular device. By working with numerous chip manufacturers, Apple and other electronics companies can pick and choose individual chips that are particularly energy efficient. The iPhone’s glass screen, announced this week, will also help save energy. The more tasks a phone is running (phone calls, Web browsing sessions) the more quickly the battery gets depleted. Advanced operating systems—iPhone uses a version of Apple’s OS X—can regulate the device’s power usage, powering down the processor or the screen when they’re not active. (Tech companies occasionally calculate a device’s battery life with most of its hardware components shut off, an unrealistic situation that tends to produce an inflated projection of the gadget’s real-world power consumption. Most consumer electronics, including the iPhone, are powered by lithium-ion batteries. These power sources are popular because they pack many times the power of other types of batteries in a fraction of the space. Tech analysts say new screen technology will offer a huge amount of power savings. A large touch screen like the one on the iPhone is particularly power-intensive. As a result, gadget manufacturers are increasingly ditching traditional LCD displays in favor of the more energy efficient organic light-emitting diode screens.

Apple to release latest Leopard beta to developers who couldn’t make WWDC
June 24, 2007
A little green and blue TUAW birdie has just informed the web that Apple is planning to release the Leopard beta that WWDC attendees received last week to the rest of qualifying ADC members. As to when developers can fire up their browsers and download managers, the only language we have to go on is ’soon.’
We’re also told that this secondary release is happening quite a bit sooner than it did at last year’s WWDC, so I guess this might be a win for developers, all things considered.

Latest rumour: Google to buy Apple
June 21, 2007
+
Scepticism about the launch of the Apple iPhone is growing, and it isn’t helping the Apple share price. What a coincidence that exactly as things get tougher in the stock market, rumours start appearing that will “cause a 40 per cent premium on the Apple share price”!
The rumours simply say that Google may buy Apple.
The original idea is buried deep in a New York Magazine hagiography of Jobs by John Heilemann, mostly saying how the appearance of failing physical health actually marks his ascendance to a Higher Plane of guruhood.
